Jacob was born on June 21, 2002 via emergency C-section at 3:16 PM. This blog follows him through the NICU and the graduate nursery to his home—and we'll see where it goes from there!

Jacob's Journey--From NICU to Home!

The story of a micro-preemie. . .
Born June 21, 2002
Weight: 750 g (1lb, 10.5 oz)
Length: 13.8 inches
Gestation age: 28 weeks

Jacob had some fun at the park on Labor Day. We decided to get him outside a bit so he could play in the wide-open spaces. He wasn't too sure about it at first, but soon warmed up to the idea.

We went (for his last visit) to the Next Step Developmental Lab at the hospital where he was born. This is where they follow up on all their preemies and test them to see where they are developmentally. Jacob is doing fine, although he's at the age now where sitting still and stacking blocks or putting pegs into a board is pretty far down the list of his priorities. He is now firmly on the "regular" kids growth chart, although he's near the bottom. But it was quite the little growth spurt that put him on there. He is now around 33 inches tall (I say "around" because getting him to stand still against the wall so someone can measure him is an iffy proposition at best) and he is 25 lbs. He isn't talking yet, but we're enrolled in the
Hanen Program and that starts next week, so we'll see if that helps move things along.

A curious giraffe at Cheyenne Mountain Zoo and a wary Jacob eye each other. Posted by Hello

It's been a very long time! I guess we've been busy chasing the boy around--he has quite the inexhaustible amount of energy, which far outstrips his parents'. We often find ourselves sitting on the couch laughing as Jacob runs around in circles in the middle of the room.

Jacob is doing very well! He's getting bigger all the time, and he sure is making a lot of noise although he isn't actually talking yet. He was just weighed at 24 1/2 lbs. and 33 inches tall. The dietician kept trying to get him to stand up and still with his heels against the wall so she could measure his height-ha! I told her over and over he was not going to stand there quietly, but she kept trying until he was screaming and upset. So we just laid him down on the infant measuring table. Whatever, all I know is the boy is not going to stand still for anything unless he is utterly fascinated by something.

So, he's now firmly on the growth chart, and looking pretty good! He had quite a growth spurt from his 2-year checkup at the pediatrician's on July 12. He keeps that up, he'll be "normal" sized in a year. He's perfect to us just as he is, though!

We found a new image posting program we'll use to upload new pictures of Jacob every once in a while. You can see the results below--Jacob was very tired after a long day of running around!
